Description
What is Buscopan IBS Relief?
Buscopan is a non-prescription medication containing hyoscine butylbromide, designed to relieve abdominal pain and symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
What is Buscopan used for?
It’s intended to alleviate common IBS symptoms, such as abdominal cramps, stomach pain, and muscle spasms within the digestive system.
How does Buscopan work?
IBS sufferers often experience heightened sensitivity to triggers like specific foods, drinks, stress, and anxiety, which can lead to painful cramps and spasms in the stomach, resulting in symptoms such as bloating, gas, and discomfort. The active ingredient in Buscopan, hyoscine butylbromide, is part of a group of medications called antispasmodics. It works by blocking receptors in the gut muscles, which helps reduce the spasms causing IBS symptoms.
How long does Buscopan take to work?
Buscopan typically starts to ease IBS-related cramps within about 15 minutes after taking it.
How should I take Buscopan?
Take Buscopan as soon as you feel abdominal pain or other IBS symptoms. For adults and children aged 12 and above, the recommended dosage is two tablets, up to four times daily. Buscopan IBS Relief tablets should not be given to children under 12 and should not be used for more than two weeks without consulting a doctor.
Who shouldn’t take Buscopan?
Buscopan may not be suitable for those with a very swollen abdomen, angle-closure glaucoma (as it can increase eye pressure), myasthenia gravis, or anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to Buscopan or similar medications.
Consult your doctor before taking Buscopan if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; have an intolerance to certain sugars (as Buscopan tablets contain sugars); have a fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, an intestinal blockage, fever, hyperthyroidism, or digestive issues like gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), severe constipation, or ulcerative colitis.
It is also advisable to seek medical advice if you have recently experienced bloody stools, feel excessively tired, have unexplained weight loss or appetite changes, suffer from nausea or vomiting, have unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, or suspect food poisoning.
Does Buscopan have side effects?
While most people tolerate Buscopan well, some common side effects can affect more than 1 in 100 people, including dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and increased heart rate. In rare instances, serious side effects may occur. Discontinue use and consult your GP if you develop a painful red eye with vision loss or experience difficulty urinating.
How should I store Buscopan?
Store Buscopan in a cool, dry location with a temperature below 25°C.
