Description
What is Dioctyl?
Dioctyl is a medication designed to alleviate constipation. Its active ingredient is docusate sodium.
What is Dioctyl used for?
Dioctyl is used to relieve constipation and complications associated with hard stools. It can also help reduce pain in conditions worsened by hard stools, such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures.
How does Dioctyl work?
Docusate sodium functions in two primary ways. Firstly, it softens the stools by allowing more water and fat to penetrate them, making it easier and less painful to pass stools, particularly for those with anal fissures or hemorrhoids. Secondly, it stimulates the nerves in the colon and rectum walls, causing the bowel muscles to contract more frequently and forcefully. This dual action facilitates the passage of stools without straining, which can damage the rectal lining.
How long does it take for Dioctyl to work?
Dioctyl typically acts quickly, with most individuals experiencing a bowel movement within one to two days of starting treatment.
How should I take Dioctyl?
Adults are advised to take up to five tablets (500 mg) of Dioctyl per day to relieve constipation, although a lower dose may be sufficient. Doses should be spaced evenly throughout the day. Dioctyl is intended for short-term use and should not be taken for more than five days. If constipation persists beyond this period, consult a doctor for further guidance.
Who can’t take Dioctyl?
Dioctyl is generally safe for most individuals when used for short durations. However, it may not be appropriate for pregnant women, so it’s important to consult a doctor before use. Additionally, it may pass into breast milk, so caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers.
Do not take Dioctyl if you:
- Are under 12 years old
- Have felt nauseous or vomited in the past 24 hours
- Experience persistent stomach pain
- Have an intestinal obstruction
- Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dioctyl
What are the side effects of Dioctyl?
Dioctyl is usually well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience mild side effects, such as abdominal cramps, nausea, or skin rashes. Prolonged or excessive use of laxatives can lead to diarrhoea, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and low potassium levels in the body, which is why Dioctyl should be used only for short periods.
How should I store Dioctyl?
Store Dioctyl in a cool, dry place where the temperature does not exceed 25°C (approximately 77°F).
