Description

What is Doxycycline, and what is it used for?
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the tetracycline group, effective against a range of bacterial infections, including malaria.

How does it work?
Doxycycline works by targeting and killing the malaria parasite once it enters the bloodstream following a mosquito bite. This helps prevent the malaria infection from developing, so starting it before entering a high-risk malaria area is essential, and continuing for up to four weeks after departure provides ongoing protection.

How should I take Doxycycline?
Avoid alcohol while on Doxycycline. If the tablets irritate your throat, take them with water or food. Remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet to reduce the risk of throat irritation. A typical dose is 100 mg daily, starting 1-2 days before entering a malaria-risk area, continued during your stay, and for 28 days afterward.

Which is better: Malarone or Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is especially useful in areas with Chloroquine-resistant malaria or multi-drug resistant P. falciparum strains. While Doxycycline is generally more affordable, Malarone has fewer side effects, so the choice depends on cost, resistance concerns, and tolerance.
