What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, also known as Vitamin B9. It is commonly taken to support the normal development of an unborn baby’s brain, skull, and spinal cord, helping to prevent conditions such as spina bifida.
What are the benefits of Folic Acid?
Folic acid offers several benefits, including:
- Supporting proper development of an unborn baby’s brain, skull, and spinal cord.
- Treating or preventing low levels of folate in the blood, which can lead to a type of anaemia.
- Reducing side effects associated with methotrexate, a medication for severe arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and psoriasis.
- Aiding in cell division and the formation of normal red blood cells.
How do I take Folic Acid?
It is recommended to take one tablet daily with food or a drink. If you are planning to get pregnant, start taking folic acid a few months before conception and continue for the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy.
Don’t take it if you:
