Description
What is Imigran and how does it work?
Imigran is a medicine for treating migraine headaches. It contains a substance called sumatriptan succinate, which is part of a group of medications known as triptans. These drugs help to reverse the temporary widening of blood vessels in the brain. This action eases the pain and other symptoms that come with migraine attacks, like nausea and sensitivity to light. Imigran is versatile and comes in different forms, like tablets, nasal spray, and injections.
Can I take Imigran?
You can use Imigran and similar drugs if you have fewer than 10 migraines a month and simple pain relievers like paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin don’t help enough. They are not as effective if taken during the “aura” phase of a migraine, and they work less well when the headache is very severe.
When and how should I take Imigran?
You can take Imigran at any time during a migraine, but it’s best to take a tablet as soon as you feel a migraine coming on. However, don’t take a tablet to prevent a migraine.
For adults, the recommended dose is one 50mg tablet with water. If your headache comes back, you can take another tablet, but wait at least 2 hours after the first one. Don’t take more than a total of 300mg in 24 hours, and don’t take two tablets for the same migraine.
How long does it take to work?
Imigran usually starts working in about 30 minutes, but it might take up to an hour.
How long does it last?
The effects of sumatriptan last for about 2 hours.
What is the difference between Imigran and Sumatriptan?
Imigran is the brand name for sumatriptan succinate, which is also the main ingredient in the generic version called Sumatriptan. Both of these medicines work the same way, but the generic version is usually cheaper.
