Description

Do You Need Protection Against Malaria?
If you’re traveling to an area where malaria is common, it’s essential to take preventive medicine. Different medications work against different types of malaria, so consult with your doctor, pharmacist, or a travel clinic to determine the best choice based on your destination and the malaria risks in that area.

What is Lariam and What is it Used For?
Lariam is a medicine used to prevent and treat malaria, specifically targeting the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. It contains the active ingredient Mefloquine hydrochloride, with each tablet containing 250mg of it.

How Does It Work?
When an infected mosquito bites you, it transmits the malaria parasite into your bloodstream. Lariam targets and destroys the parasite to prevent and treat malaria.

How Do I Take Lariam?
If you weigh over 45kg, take one 250mg tablet once a week, starting 2 to 3 weeks before traveling to a malaria-prone area. Continue taking it while you’re there and for 4 weeks after leaving. Swallow the tablet whole with plenty of water, ideally after a meal.

How Is Lariam Different from Malarone?
While both Lariam and Malarone are used to prevent or treat malaria, they have different active ingredients and dosing schedules. Lariam can cause more severe side effects than Malarone. If you experience mental health issues such as mood changes, anxiety, depression, or seizures, stop taking Lariam and seek medical advice. If you’re concerned about side effects or have experienced any mental health problems with this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist for alternative options.
