What is Levonorgestrel?
Levonorgestrel is an emergency contraception pill, commonly known as the ‘morning-after pill’. It is designed to be used after unprotected sex to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Levonorgestrel works by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries, preventing fertilisation by sperm. For maximum effectiveness, it should be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex, but the sooner you take it, the more effective it will be.
How does Levonorgestrel prevent unplanned pregnancy?
Levonorgestrel works by delaying or stopping the release of an egg from the ovary, so it cannot be fertilised by sperm. This emergency contraception mimics the effects of the hormone progesterone, which is naturally produced in the ovaries. To ensure the best results, Levonorgestrel should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It doesn’t interfere with other regular methods of contraception.
How effective is Levonorgestrel at preventing unplanned pregnancy?
The effectiveness of Levonorgestrel depends on how soon it is taken after unprotected sex:
- Taken within 24 hours: 95% effective
- Taken between 24 and 48 hours: 85% effective
- Taken between 48 and 72 hours: 58% effective
After 72 hours, Levonorgestrel may no longer be effective. It’s important to note that, despite its name, you don’t have to wait until the “morning after” to take it — it can be used at any point up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.
How do I take Levonorgestrel?
To use Levonorgestrel, take one tablet with water as soon as possible after unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the more effective it will be.
- If you vomit or have diarrhoea within 2 hours of taking the pill, it may not have been absorbed properly, and you may need to take another dose. In this case, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
What is the difference between Levonelle and Levonorgestrel?
Levonelle is simply the branded version of Levonorgestrel. Both Levonelle and the generic Levonorgestrel contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way. The primary difference is the price: Levonelle is typically more expensive due to its brand name.
