Description
What is Losec?
Losec is a medication used to treat symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. It contains omeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). By reducing stomach acid, it helps ease discomfort such as chest pain, irritation, and inflammation in the oesophagus caused by acid reflux.
What is Acid Reflux (GORD)?
Acid reflux, also known as Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), happens when the lower oesophageal sphincter (the barrier between the stomach and oesophagus) becomes weakened. This allows stomach acid to flow upwards into the oesophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, and inflammation.
How Does Losec Work?
Losec works by using omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, which blocks the enzyme responsible for producing stomach acid. By preventing acid production, Losec helps reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and allows the oesophagus to heal from acid damage.
How to Take Losec
For adults, the typical dose of Losec is one capsule daily, taken with water, usually in the morning. The standard treatment period is 4 weeks, but if symptoms persist, treatment can continue for another 4-8 weeks, as advised by a healthcare professional. Always swallow the capsule whole and avoid breaking or chewing it.
Difference Between Losec and Omeprazole
Losec is the brand name for the medication containing omeprazole. Both Losec and generic omeprazole contain the same active ingredient in the same dosage. The primary difference is the cost, as omeprazole is available as a more affordable generic option, but both offer the same effectiveness in treating acid reflux and related conditions.
