Description
What is Maxalt and how does it work?
Maxalt is a medication used to treat migraine headaches. It contains rizatriptan benzoate, an active ingredient that belongs to a group of drugs known as triptans. Rizatriptan is used to treat the headache phase of a migraine by narrowing the temporarily dilated blood vessels around the brain, which are believed to cause migraines.
When and how should I take it?
The recommended dose of Maxalt is one 10mg tablet taken with water. It is best to take the tablet as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, ideally on an empty stomach for quicker absorption.
If your migraine recurs, you may take another tablet, but wait at least 2 hours after the first one. If the first tablet does not relieve your headache, do not take a second tablet for the same migraine. Do not exceed two tablets in a 24-hour period, and do not use the tablet as a preventive measure for migraines.
How long does it take to work?
Maxalt typically starts to take effect around 30 minutes after consumption.
How long does it last?
The effects of Maxalt generally last for about 2-3 hours.
What is the difference between Maxalt and Rizatriptan?
Maxalt and Rizatriptan are essentially the same medication, as both contain rizatriptan benzoate and function in the same way to narrow blood vessels in the head.
Is Maxalt available in any other form?
Rizatriptan is also available as dissolvable tablets that melt on the tongue, as well as in wafer form that melts in the mouth.
