Movicol: Constipation Relief Medicine
Movicol is a powder-based medicine designed to relieve constipation. It contains macrogol, an active ingredient that, when mixed with water, helps soften and ease the passage of stool.
What is Movicol Used For?
Movicol is effective for relieving:
- General constipation by making bowel movements easier.
- Fecal impaction, which helps clear hard stool stuck in the bowel after prolonged constipation.
How Does Movicol Work?
Unlike many laxatives, Movicol works by increasing stool size and softness, enabling it to move through the intestines more comfortably without triggering intense muscle contractions in the bowel.
How Long Does Movicol Take to Work?
Movicol may take up to two days to provide relief from constipation.
Directions for Use
For general constipation, adults and children over 12 can mix one packet with 125ml of water and drink up to three times daily as needed. For fecal impaction, take eight packets over six hours, ideally mixed in a litre of water and consumed gradually. Do not use Movicol for more than three days without consulting a doctor.
Can Children Use Movicol?
Movicol is not recommended for children under 12. For younger children, consult a healthcare professional for alternatives.
Who Should Avoid Movicol?
Do not use Movicol if you have allergies to macrogol, previous intestinal blockages, bowel perforation, intestinal paralysis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon, or if you’re managing specific heart conditions or following a low-sodium diet.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhoea, indigestion, mild tummy discomfort, bloating, nausea, and flatulence. Rarely, severe electrolyte imbalance with symptoms like muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, and swelling may occur.
