What is Nexium and what is it used for?
Nexium is a medication used to treat Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, chest discomfort, and inflammation. The active ingredient in Nexium is esomeprazole, which works to reduce stomach acid production.
What is Acid Reflux (GORD)?
Acid reflux, or Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the oesophagus and sometimes the mouth. This backflow, known as acid reflux, can cause a burning sensation (heartburn) in the chest or throat. Normally, a barrier called the lower oesophageal sphincter prevents this acid backflow, but when this barrier weakens or relaxes inappropriately, it leads to GORD.
How does Nexium work?
Nexium (esomeprazole) belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. By lowering stomach acid levels, Nexium helps relieve the discomfort, burning sensations, and inflammation caused by acid reflux and GORD.
How should I take Nexium?
Take one tablet of Nexium each morning, ideally before meals. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water—do not chew or crush the tablet, as this may affect how the medication is absorbed.
What’s the difference between Nexium and Esomeprazole?
Nexium contains the active ingredient esomeprazole, which is also available in generic forms. Both the brand Nexium and its generic versions are equally effective, as generics must meet the same stringent quality and safety standards set for the branded medication. However, Nexium is a specific brand, while esomeprazole may be available under other names as a lower-cost alternative.
