Description
What is Norethisterone?
Norethisterone is a tablet that can delay your period. It’s part of a group of medicines called progestogens and acts like the hormone progesterone, which normally tells your body to stop your period. Each Norethisterone tablet has 5mg of the active ingredient, norethisterone.
How does Norethisterone work?
In your menstrual cycle, the hormone progesterone levels can change. When progesterone levels drop toward the end of your cycle, your womb lining breaks down, and you get your period. Norethisterone does what progesterone does – it tells your body not to break down the womb lining, so you won’t have your period.
How do you take Norethisterone?
To delay your period effectively, you need to take one 5mg Norethisterone tablet three times a day. Start taking the tablets three days before your period is supposed to start.
How quickly after stopping treatment will your period return?
Usually, your period should come back within 2-3 days after you finish your Norethisterone treatment.
What do you do if your period does not return after stopping Norethisterone?
If your period doesn’t come back three days after you finish your Norethisterone treatment, contact a doctor right away. You shouldn’t take Norethisterone for more than 17 days.
Who shouldn’t take Norethisterone?
Norethisterone may not be safe for everyone, so it’s important to read this list or talk to a doctor before you take it.

- You’ve experienced severe itching all over your body (pruritus).

Is Norethisterone a contraceptive?
Norethisterone won’t prevent pregnancy, so it’s not a contraceptive. If you need birth control, talk to your GP or pharmacist about other options.
Can you take Norethisterone while pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking Norethisterone because hormonal medicines can affect your baby’s development.

Keep Norethisterone tablets below 25°C. Store them in a cool, dark place away from light. If you see any discoloration on the tablets, they should be white – stop taking them and contact your healthcare provider.

Each Norethisterone tablet has 5mg of norethisterone as the active ingredient, along with lactose, maize starch, and magnesium stearate.
How do you dispose of Norethisterone?
If you need to stop taking Norethisterone, don’t throw the tablets in the trash or down the sink. Ask a pharmacist how to properly dispose of any leftover Norethisterone tablets. This helps protect the environment.
What if you forget a dose of Norethisterone?
If you forget to take a Norethisterone tablet, take one as soon as you remember, then continue taking your next doses at your regular times. Don’t take two tablets at once to make up for the missed one.
