What are Opticrom Eye Drops?
Opticrom Eye Drops are a treatment for eye allergies. They contain 2% Sodium Cromoglicate, which stabilises mast cells in the eyes to prevent allergic reactions.
What are Opticrom Eye Drops used for?
Opticrom Eye Drops are used to relieve symptoms of eye allergies, including:
- Itchy eyes
- Watery eyes
- Red eyes
- Swollen or inflamed eyes
- Swollen eyelids
These symptoms are often caused by seasonal (hay fever) or perennial allergies (from dust mites or pet dander).
How do Opticrom Eye Drops work?
Sodium Cromoglicate stabilises mast cells, preventing them from releasing histamine during an allergic reaction. By stopping the release of histamine, the drops help reduce swelling and irritation in the eyes, addressing the cause of allergy symptoms rather than just treating the symptoms after histamine has been released.
How do you use Opticrom Eye Drops?
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Remove the cap from the eye drop bottle.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid of your eye to create a small pocket.
- Hold the bottle upside down over your eye, ensuring it doesn’t touch your eye.
- Gently squeeze the bottle to release one or two drops into your eye.
- Close your eye and press gently on the area between the corner of your eye and nose to keep the drops from leaking out.
- Repeat for the other eye.
- Replace the cap after use.
Use 1-2 drops in each eye, up to four times a day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but don’t take extra to make up for a missed dose.
How long does it take Opticrom Eye Drops to work?
It can take 2-3 days of use to start feeling relief from symptoms. If you don’t notice any improvement after this time, consult your doctor.
Can I use Opticrom Eye Drops with contact lenses?
Opticrom Eye Drops contain benzalkonium chloride, which can discolour soft contact lenses. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. The drops can be used if you don’t wear soft contact lenses.
Who should not use Opticrom Eye Drops?
Do not use Opticrom Eye Drops if you:
- Wear soft contact lenses
- Have dry eye disease or use eye drops for dry eyes
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have had an allergic reaction to eye drops before
