Description
What is Phenergan?
Phenergan is a medication that induces sleepiness and contains the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride.
What is Phenergan Used For?
Phenergan is used to treat various conditions, including:
- Difficulty falling asleep (insomnia) in adults.
- Allergies, such as hay fever or minor allergic reactions.
- Motion sickness and nausea or vomiting.
- Coughing and a runny nose.
How Does Phenergan Work?
When the body detects something harmful, it releases histamine, which causes blood vessels to expand and skin to swell. In individuals with allergies, the body mistakenly identifies harmless substances as threats, leading to the release of histamine and symptoms like redness, itching, and swelling.
Promethazine hydrochloride, an antihistamine in Phenergan, blocks histamine, alleviating allergy symptoms like hay fever. It also promotes drowsiness, aiding sleep problems, and reduces nausea, particularly during travel.
How Long Does Phenergan Take to Work?
Phenergan begins to take effect approximately 20 minutes after ingestion.
How Long Does Phenergan Last?
The effects of Phenergan can last from 12 to 24 hours.
How Should I Take Phenergan?
Adults should take one tablet at night as needed, particularly if sleep is hindered by anxiety or hay fever.
Who Shouldn’t Take Phenergan?
While most adults can safely use Phenergan for short durations, it may not be suitable for everyone. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you:
- Have previously had an allergic reaction to promethazine or similar medications.
- Have specific eye conditions.
- Experience difficulty urinating.
- Have epilepsy or a history of seizures.
- Are intolerant to certain sugars.
- Have an allergy test scheduled.
- Cannot consume alcohol.
- Are trying to conceive.
Does Phenergan Have Side Effects?
Some individuals may experience mild side effects while using Phenergan, including daytime drowsiness, nightmares, dizziness, concentration difficulties, or headaches. It may also increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, so it’s advisable to avoid direct sun exposure and follow sun safety measures.
Older adults (over 65) may encounter additional side effects such as confusion, dry mouth, blurred vision, or urinary difficulties.
In rare cases, Phenergan can lead to severe side effects. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if you experience signs of liver issues, unusual bleeding or bruising, muscle problems, or severe allergic reactions.
How Should I Store Phenergan?
Store Phenergan in a cool, dry place below 25°C to maintain its effectiveness.
