Description
What is Propecia?
Propecia is a medication designed to help men with male pattern hair loss, a common condition that causes thinning hair, a receding hairline, or balding on the crown of the head. The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride, which belongs to a class of medicines called type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
How does it work?
Finasteride works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a hormone that contributes to hair thinning and hair loss. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, Propecia helps prevent further hair loss and promotes new hair growth.
It is important to note that Propecia will not work for men who have already lost all their hair.
How effective is Propecia?
Propecia has been shown to be an effective treatment for male pattern hair loss. In a study involving 279 men over five years, 48% of participants experienced increased hair coverage, and 42% saw no further hair loss. Overall, 90% of the men in the study benefited from using Propecia. In contrast, only 25% of the men in a group that did not take Propecia showed any improvement.
How to use Propecia?
Take one tablet daily, swallowing it whole with water. You can take it with or without food, but do not crush or chew the tablet. If you forget a dose, simply continue with your next scheduled dose. Do not double up on doses to make up for one missed.
How long does it take to work?
It typically takes 3-6 months to notice the full effects of Propecia. Consistent use is important, as any hair regrowth may be lost within 9-12 months if the medication is discontinued.
What’s the difference between Propecia and Finasteride?
Propecia and Finasteride contain the same active ingredient, finasteride, and work in the same way. The primary difference is that Propecia is the branded version, which tends to be more expensive, while Finasteride is the generic version and usually comes at a lower cost. Both treatments offer the same benefits for male pattern hair loss.
