Description

What is Rizatriptan and how does it work?

Rizatriptan is a well-known treatment for migraines. It contains an active ingredient called rizatriptan benzoate, which belongs to a group of medications known as triptans or selective serotonin 5-HT receptor agonists. Rizatriptan specifically targets the headache phase of a migraine. Migraines are thought to occur when the blood vessels surrounding the brain temporarily widen. Rizatriptan works by narrowing these blood vessels, which helps reverse the effects of a migraine and relieve the headache.

When and how should I take it?

The recommended dose of Rizatriptan is 10mg. You should swallow it with water as soon as your migraine begins. To ensure quicker absorption, it is best to take the medicine on an empty stomach.

If your migraine returns, you can take another tablet, but wait at least 2 hours after the first dose. If the first tablet does not relieve your headache, do not take a second one for the same migraine. Do not take more than 2 tablets in one day, and note that Rizatriptan is not intended to prevent migraines.

How long does it take to work?

Rizatriptan typically begins to work within about 30 minutes.

How long does it last?

The effects of Rizatriptan last for approximately 2-3 hours.

What is the difference between Rizatriptan and Sumatriptan?

Rizatriptan contains rizatriptan benzoate as its active ingredient, while Sumatriptan contains sumatriptan succinate. Both medications belong to the same class and work by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. However, Rizatriptan has been clinically shown to act faster than Sumatriptan, and food has less impact on its effectiveness compared to Sumatriptan.

Is Rizatriptan available in any other form?

Rizatriptan is also available in two other forms: orodispersible tablets that dissolve on the tongue and wafers that dissolve in the mouth. These alternatives are suitable for people who may have difficulty swallowing tablets or who feel nauseous.
