Description
What is Zolmitriptan and how does it work?
Zolmitriptan is a medication used to treat migraine headaches. It contains zolmitriptan, an active ingredient that belongs to a class of medicines known as “triptans” or serotonin 5-HT receptor agonists. It works by reducing the temporary swelling of blood vessels around the brain, which is believed to contribute to migraines. This helps alleviate the headache associated with a migraine.
When and how should I take Zolmitriptan?
Zolmitriptan is available in both tablet and dispersible tablet forms. For best results, swallow a Zolmitriptan tablet whole with water as soon as you feel a migraine starting. It will not prevent an attack, so it should be taken at the onset of symptoms. The dispersible tablet should be placed on your tongue and allowed to dissolve in your mouth.
The recommended dose is 2.5mg, and it can be taken with or without food, as food does not affect its effectiveness. If your migraine returns, you may take another tablet, but wait at least 2 hours after the first dose. Do not take more than two tablets in one day.
How long does it take to work?
Zolmitriptan usually begins to work within 45 minutes to an hour after taking a tablet.
How long does it last?
The effects of Zolmitriptan typically last around 2 hours.
What are the different forms of Zolmitriptan available?
Zolmitriptan is available in several forms. In addition to the regular tablets, there is Zolmitriptan Rapimelt, which dissolves on your tongue. A branded version of the medication, called Zomig, is also available.
What is the difference between Zomig and Zolmitriptan?
Zomig and Zolmitriptan are essentially the same in terms of their strength and effectiveness in treating migraines. Zomig is the branded version of Generic Zolmitriptan, and both contain zolmitriptan as their active ingredient. The generic version, Zolmitriptan, is generally more affordable than the branded Zomig.
