What is Acne?

Acne, also called acne vulgaris, is a common and long-lasting skin problem. It shows up as whiteheads, blackheads, oily skin, and red, swollen spots, mostly on the face, back, or chest. It often happens to teenagers and young adults, usually between 11 and 30 years old.

What causes Acne?

Acne is caused by too much of a bacteria called P. acnes on the skin. It’s connected to hormone changes, like during puberty, but it can start at any age.

Hormones control how much oil comes out of glands near your hair follicles. When there’s too much oil, it can make the usually harmless P. acnes bacteria make your skin red and swollen.

Acne can also run in families, and hormone changes during periods or pregnancy can give women acne.

How can I manage my Acne?

Clean your skin gently, but not more than twice a day, using mild cleansers instead of harsh soap, which can make your skin even more irritated.

Don’t squeeze the red spots or blackheads because it can make things worse and might leave permanent scars.

What are the different types of pimples?

There are six main types of pimples you can get with acne:

  1. Whiteheads: These are firm, hard bumps that are tough to pop.
  2. Blackheads: They look like black dots on your skin, but they’re not dirty – it’s just the color from the hair follicle inside.
  3. Pustules: These are small, red bumps that can feel sore or tender.
  4. Papules: These are red bumps with a white dot in the middle, caused by pus building up.
  5. Nodules: These are painful, big, hard bumps under your skin.
  6. Cysts: These are large, filled with pus, and can leave scars.

What treatments are there for Acne?

While acne can’t be completely cured, there are treatments available. Medications like Duac and Epiduo can help by reducing skin inflammation, getting rid of existing pimples and blackheads, and killing the bacteria that cause acne.

If your acne is really bad, you can see your doctor for antibiotics or stronger prescription creams to fight acne.
